  •  Now that is some damned fine advice: (13+ / 0-)
PS if the person who responds to you does so poorly but aggressively, you don't have to respond. You "won," because they look like an asshole talking nonsense, and you don't. Let it stop, before you get so caught up in it that you both just start to look like assholes talking nonsense.
I love it when the veterans start swapping war stories. More! More!

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.

    •  Oh, but my aching back! (8+ / 0-)

I will add that I enjoy thinking back to a time when I lost my own temper so much that I told our lovely host, in the heat of an argument, that if his ego got any bigger, it would pull in small planets.

FYI, Markos has his own temper, and understands tempers, I think, so you don't have to be cowed by him. You can argue with our host, and occasionally, you can probably even lose your temper. If you argue in good faith, and you now-and-then lose your temper in good faith, you're mostly going to do fine here. Forgive others for their good faith moments of ugly, too, by and large -- good folks lose it sometimes.

But the more important part of that story is that I honestly don't have the foggiest memory of what I was so pissed off about. Clearly, you know, it was, like, important and stuff at the time, but I have absolutely no idea why I was that angry, or what the argument was even about.

That loss of perspective happens a lot on the internets. The more self-critical realize it later, once they're calmer. The less navel-gazing types probably don't, and are still convinced they're absolutely right about the thing, though they can't remember what it was.
