  •  We retired to Oregon from WA state (3+ / 0-)

We chose McMinnville, a town of about 30,000 in wine country. It is a pretty self contained town with lots of local activities, but about an hour from Portland or the coast, and 45 minutes from decent shopping in Salem. Very friendly, lots of musical stuff going on. Politically it is still red, but drifting blue. Sunnier than Portland, I think. But if you can't deal with cloudy, rainy winters, you should think twice. Although it's 4 hours drive to sunny, snowy Bend, and 12 hours to Redding, CA for a warm break.
