    The main character has two owners during the course of the movie.  The second is completely and thoroughly savage to his slaves.  The other, played by Benedict Cumberbatch is well, mild is probably the best word.  (I can't bring myself to call a slave owner "civil".)  At one point the main character even says that this man is "A good man, given the circumstances."  

    That's a whale of a compliment, given the circumstances. If anyone, for whatever bizarre reason, feels the need to have a "balanced" portrayal of what they would like call The Peculiar Institution, this is about as even-tempered as a work of art can be on this subject.
