    The problem isn't myths, the problem is when people start taking myths as history.  

    Like him, I don't think they were intended to be taken as history or "an explanation for things people didn't understand because they didn't have science".  (In that sense, I think rationalists can be just as literalistic and unimaginative as fundamentalists.)

    I think, for the most part, they were meant to be taken as imaginative STORIES -- stories that could multiple meanings, nonverbal and non rational meanings, and could contain deeper, less literal truths.
