  •  if the plan was to use hostages, and they were (3+ / 0-)

successful landing the plane somewhere for that purpose, i imagine they let it be known right away they had hostages and what they wanted in return.

some governments might want to keep that secret - which might explain some of the confusion and backtracking.

the extortionists might want to keep it secret if they were demanding something that would turn the public against them, such as something as insane as a nuke, or something the public would generally reject as being worth those hostages. maybe they want people killed, for instance.

and maybe if the situation was already 'resolved' unsuccessfully- such as with an unsuccessful chinese military raid that got everyone killed they may not want that out.

    dunno, just guessing....

IF the plane and hostages are still intact and safe somewhere, this delay is demonstrating what bad asses they are that they could pull off a hijacking such as this as they sit back and watch the world try to find them.  If I were running this hijack operation, I would say "wait... let the world find out week after week that they are helpless and cannot find us.  THEN we will have more bargaining power as their impotence is demonstrated on a global scale."  And as public befuddlement and fear increases, so will receptivity to ransom demands.

      Or.

I can imagine a completely different scenario.  That on the plane -either person or contained in/on the plane, was information/goods so valuable to a cause that that was the prime goal:  To get that person/goods/information.  And ransom demands are beside the point.  In these circumstances, the CIA, MI5's, Interpol probably have a clue to this wrinkle, and may choose not to make it public.

      Two other possibilities.

there's a history of important leftists or anti-capitalists going down in planes- used to be an extensive list on line by cheryl seal-

as far as hostage, anyone famous would probably have been noticed on the passenger list, but maybe he she don't have known importance. but no mention of anyone famous on board so far as i know.

a delay though, would require keeping all those hostages fed and controlled and well.
