Franklin County is turning constantly bluer as it grows.

    •  Columbus metro is traditionally Republican (0+ / 0-)

I was born there and our Congressman was Chalmers Wylie (R).  Clinton lost Franklin County in '92 also.

      •  I checked the 2013 County estimates (0+ / 0-)

Franklin County grew a bit over 4% from 2010 to 2013.  It grew over 10% in the 00s.

Columbus Metro is rapidly bluing, as KingOfSpades said. That's why Boehner's boys redistricted the congressional districts the way they did. Previously they had chopped up Columbus and attached each of three pieces of a outer county area in order to neutralize the Democrats. But as Columbus grows bluer, those GOP districts were becoming shakier. So they created a new Democratic district in Columbus and did a vote sink. That district was on by Joyce Beatty, making her Ohio's second African-American in Congress, even though this is emphatically not a majority-minority district — slightly less than 30% minority. (I live in Ohio's majority minority district where we are represented by the very excellent Marcia Fudge, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus).

While Columbus metro is becoming deep blue, the outer ring counties are as red as ever. Delaware County. Ugh. Nuke the place. It gives us clowns like Kris "Wife Beater" Jordan and Andrew "privatize all the schools" Brenner, the guy with the blog that ran the piece about the Connecticut shootings being possibly a government-run "false flag" operation.

        •  I meant just Franklin County when I said metro (0+ / 0-)

kind of a misnomer on my part.  Yeah, the collar counties are a pain.
My point was that Columbus used to be dominated by business Republicans like Wylie and Rinehart (who was mayor when my family lived there).  I also just found out that current Mayor Coleman was the first Democratic mayor elected in Columbus since the late '60s.

Idiosyncratic, pro-establishment. Liberal, not progressive. For the poor, the children, the planet, and the rule of law.

in Franklin, Montgomery, and Hamilton counties and even if you maintain a 50% black district, SD-3 becomes like 60% Obama in Franklin County, and the disgustingly gerrymandered SD-5 becomes about 58-59% Obama in Montgomery. However it's kind of hard to get Dems another seat in Hamilton if you have to maintain the 9th district at around half black, mainly because the remaining liberal parts of the county are on opposite sides of it.
