        ...controlled press, dissention blocked, minorities persecuted... it's not the paragon of freedom by any means.

          But it's more like, well, what if Capone's mob had taken complete control of Chicago, mayor, chief of police, judges all of it. That's a closer analogy than the Soviet Union. During the Great Purge of 1937-38 the NKVD summarily executed 700,000 people. They arrested them, took them down to NKVD headquarters and shot them in the back of the head. Relatives got a note saying, "sentenced to 10 years without right of correspondence." That kind of thing isn't happening now.

            ...but, Capone's Chicago wasn't exactly an ideal place to live, especially if you were willing to cross the guy.
