  •  My ex is a surgeon. They worked him hard (7+ / 0-)

in residency (Harvard/Beth Israel Deaconess Boston) up to 120 hours a WEEK. For about 33K a year. I very nearly convinced him to unionize the residents. Too bad he didn't, but the Federal Government intervened. They could only be worked 80 hours a week after that. For the same pay.

Doctoring, I have discovered, is based on hazing and wage theft. Think about that next time someone wants to do a procedure on you.

broken pinkie. I know that sounds trite, but I am a professional musician and work with my hands. I asked the resident how long he'd been working in the last 48 hours and he told me the truth. I told the attending that he'd better get that resident out of the operating room or I'd sue if anything went wrong.

        I'm not kidding.

as a medieval guild system -- they get the lion's share of the labor out of the people lowest on he totem pole, who put up with it because they see the potential to work their way up and use the people under them in later years, when they achieve "master" rank.

The only thing I know is that you have your health in the hands of the least experienced people who are many times on the verge of dropping from fatigue.  Not exactly a confidence-building system.
