I obviously mostly disagree with you!!   :-)
We have lived in this area for over 45 years, and been Dem Committee Co people for the last 6 yrs. I have been through a seering trial by fire from in-laws who have turned from mildly GOP to FAUX watching, Rush-listening, TeaBaggers, RA RA War & Geo W Bush, and has caused a permanent break for Mr P.  They live in PA & WVa & VA & NC.  We have it so much better here in NYS.

Yes, I do think Cuomo & deBlasio are playing power games with the pre-K stuff.  But it surely does need to come to the rest of the state beyond NYC.  And I doubt that once started, it won't be renewed after 5 yrs.

I will put up with a lot of compromise on other issues, to keep even low-level fracking out of this state, because that is irreversible.

But the specter of Carl Paladino, or his clone, is just too awful to contemplate. Shelly Silver needs to keep some of those mostly NYC Dem office holders out of people's underwear, corruption, padding of friends wallets, etc. You have no idea how much good copy they make for the upstate GOP.

As for Sandra Lee - Cuomo isn't going anywhere near the WH unless they get married, and she doesn't seem interested.

    •  Which county? (0+ / 0-)

Not to offend, but if it's an upstate county (as you previously stated) and it's not an MTA zone county, or not Erie, Monroe, Onondaga, Schenectady, or Albany counties....  It's basically irrelevant when it comes to statewide races.  The population levels are just not there in other counties to have much clout.

Sure, there are some that have a moderately sizable population that might lean right here and there - like Saratoga or other small city/suburban counties - but they still don't have anywhere near the population needed to swing statewide elections.

And the ultra-large, full-on red counties - they tend to be like Saint Lawrence - with an average population like 5 people per square mile or something.  They certainly don't concern me.

I'm not trying to insult you - remember, I'm from up that way myself (Northern rural SarCo/Warren to be exact).  Just pointing out how NY state politics realistically work.  Rural and suburban upstate counties don't mean much.  There are more people voting in NYC than in almost all upstate counties combined, and if you add in the downstate suburbs on LI and in the MTA zone - fugheedaboutit.  This is why downstate dominates the state policy agenda and always has.

The exception politically was Crazy Carl in his last election.  He did take his home county.  But what politician doesn't?  People tend to vote for the hometown boy, even if they're crazy.  But I'd bet my next paycheck Erie doesn't go for Astorino this year.

I don't think it's BdB playing politics with UPK at all.  Cuomo is - simply to head off BdBs extremely popular millionaires tax.  BdB has been clear, concise, and consistent with his message on UPK since the start of his campaign.  That's how I gauge whether or not a pol is "playing politics" - by how consistent their message is.  As I noted, UPK wasn't even on Cuomos radar until recently.

I would agree Silver needs better control of his members, especially if he expects to ever stick it to Mario Jr.  But as astute a politician as Silver is, I suspect we aren't telling him anything he doesn't already know.  As far as their misdeeds making "good copy" in upstate papers - it's only because they tend to ignore the antics of righties caught doing stupid shit.  Again - it really matters little.  ALL OF UPSTATE above Putnam and Orange could vote for Astorino or whoever the GOP puts up.  Cuomo would still win.  It's that simple.  The problem is less what upstate bumpkins thing and more what those in the "Albany beltway" think about Cuomos political capital versus Silvers political capital.  If/when the day comes when the two have roughly matching political capital, Cuomos agenda is toast, because Silver will eat him him.  Keep in mind Silver is very, very patient.  He will bide his time and strike Cuomo at just the right moment to hurt him as much as possible - and Cuomo knows this.

You don't stay in power in Albany as long as Silver has without being a wily sonofabitch that knows a thing or two about politicking and knows how to take a political foe down.  Silver, for all intents and purposes, is like a New York version of Frank Underwood.  He's that crafty.
