And this made me think of The Exorcist.  I don't remember it being politically controversial, but it made exorcism into a "thing."  I'm sure there were other R-rated films in the 60s and early 70s that underage kids snuck in to see, but Exorcist had it going on the most, as I recall.  And my mother took my three younger brothers to see it when it came out, and they were all pre-teens.  And we weren't even Catholic!

Last Tango in Paris were all originally X rated and got at least best picture Oscar nominations. Let's see the academy extend that honor to Shaving Ryan's Privates or Schindler's Fist.
Fun movie trivia fact David Prowse the man in the Darth Vader suit, was also the authors bodyguard in A Clockwork Orange, meaning he has been in two Best Picture Nominees

    •  Yes, it was rated X (0+ / 0-)

My parents took me to see it in a double bill with Where It's At - also X rated - at the old Polk in Jackson Heights. The original X was like a modern R. We even took my kid sister.

I remember the most shocking scene was the disgusting food and dirty dishes in the opening sequence of Midnight Cowboy. Movies never showed that kind of thing, so it was a real eye opener. There was that, and the kicking the taxi scene.

There was also some sex, and * SPOILER * one of the main characters dies on a bus ride. It was a bit of a downer. In contrast, Where It's At had a happy ending, especially for a kid, since * SPOILER * the young guy takes over his dad's whole operation. There was sex too.

On the other, I had been brought up on kid friendly movies full of ever so slightly veiled S&M what with whips, chains, leather, short Roman tunics, clingy chitons, spaceship brassieres and what not, so the sex in these movies seemed relatively tame.
