in some regards, which is true of the US as well. That's why we could attack Iraq with impunity.

I just don't see any escalation from Russia. From the incredibly brutality of Chechnya to the fairly violent conflict in Georgia to the almost bloodless annexation of Crimea. It seems like the opposite of escalation really. The main difference is that Ukraine is much whiter and more European. I think one or both of those is why people are reacting to this more than to Chechnya and Georgia.

    •  no we attacked Iraq with the blessing of (0+ / 0-)

the international community. More over Bush needed his song and dance of the 'Nations of the Willing' (or whatever he called it)

That had nothing to do with the US' nuclear weapons.

attack Iraq with the blessing of the international community. That was another of Bush's lies. The security council never approved of the attack. Never. A lot of countries went along because we bullied them into it and that was mostly token support. But we culd do all that because we are the preeminent nuclear power on the planet.

        •  Let's be honest with the Security Council (0+ / 0-)

it's utterly broken and was not really my point. America made a case (one made of lies and thin air), Russia did not.  And I don't ever remember the US or the media threatening nuclear war if it didn't get it's way like some very visible Russian media has recently.

          •  And sure, Bush went through some motions (0+ / 0-)

That's far, far from getting the blessing of the international community. Not even the same ball park.

            •  we'll disagree there as I don't remember (0+ / 0-)

much in the way of protests against Bush's actions. I definitely do not remember sanctions or threats of sanctions.

              •  Not much protest? (3+ / 0-)

There were massive protests world wide.

Some of our closest allies, France, was vehemently against it.

And again, what you said was that it had the blessing of the international community. It most certainly did not.

There were no sanctions, no. If the international community had any consistency there would have been. But because the US is the most powerful country in the world there were not. For the same reason there are only token sanctions on Russia.

Or is my huge snark detector broken?
