    The Roman Emporers coopted the bishops and made them state bureucrats.  The anti science types are nostaligic for the state church of Rome, not the Christian community before Constantine.

      ...of Rome is Pontifex Maximus (Greatest Bridge-builder), which was previously applied to the pagan kings and emperors of pre-Constantinian Rome.

        But Pontifex Maximus was the chief priest of Rome during pagan times. After Christianity became the official religion, the pontifex title was attached to the Pope.
           I suspect that the bridge aspect of the title implied that the priest was a bridge to the gods.
