    while i'm glad that mb is writing about the better off budget and i hope that he'll continue to, daily kos really doesn't have the reach to get the bill the sort of public attention that would be required to build enough support to light the fires under congressmen's butts to pass it.  for that we probably need some serious attention from the corporate-owned media wurlitzer coupled with a web-media storm.

    re: fdr and his liberal compromise with the wealthy... it is often overlooked that fdr had a good bit of assistance in getting that deal on the table.  there was serious organized unrest and political pressure from his left by guys like huey long and unions that were not toothless, subservient sycophants of the democratic leadership.  it's probably fair to say that fdr stretched beyond his natural inclinations to make the compromise with (some would say for) the wealthy.  it's also fair to say that if he had failed to make that compromise that there might have been the will in the country to take the american system far further left in support of average joe workers than we wound up.  it would have probably been ugly, but some see it as a missed opportunity for the working class.
