    Copernicus had to pretend that he was proposing his astronomical model only as an aid to calculation, not as reality, and didn't allow the real version to be published until the year of his death. Luther and Calvin both denounced heliocentrism on Biblical grounds. Galileo got the second degree (being taken to the torture room and shown the instruments of torture) from the Roman Inquisition, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.

    Science fled after Galileo's heresy trial from Italy to France, Germany, and England, and did not come back until Newton and most other physicists and astronomers were removed from the index in 1758, at the urging of Roger Boscovich, a Croatian Jesuit scientist. Copernicus and Galileo continued to be banned until 1835.

    These people today are just as bad, even if not quite as numerous. Tyson needs all of us to actively have his back.
