  •  So the other day (40+ / 0-)

You may recall that we mentioned Jimmy Carter would be doing a fundraiser in NYC for his grandson, state Sen. Jason Carter, who of course is running for Jimmy's old job — governor of Georgia. Loyal Digest reader Raj Goyle (the former Kansas state senator whom you'll recall from his run for KS-04 in 2010) happened to be one of the hosts of this event and invited me as his guest after spotting the item.

So yeah, I got to meet Jimmy Carter last night! Pretty cool. Before I went down there, I asked a friend who has a sizable collection of vintage buttons to loan me some Carter swag. So I sported this button as I waited on the line to greet our 39th president:

I got a lot of great reactions from folks for it, but the best was from President Carter himself, who beamed, "I like your button!" as he grasped my hand. That made my month!

At age 89, he looks to be in remarkable health and gets around unassisted. He also still has a very vigorous handshake! He gave a lovely introduction of his grandson, who also spoke well. Excellent event, and a true privilege to be able to attend.

One of my mom's close friends is the wife of Bob Weygand, the former RI politician, and she went to some political event way back in the day. At one point, she noticed one of the Kennedy wives standing right nearby, and she managed to act swiftly enough to get a picture snapped.

What's Goyle up to these days, by the way?

    •  That's much better than my almost-story. (9+ / 0-)

I was in Plains, Georgia, with my grandfather when I was 15 years old, and we were eating lunch in this small little restaurant. All of a sudden, I hear this quiet voice say to us, "Welcome to Plains!" We turn around and standing there is Rosalynn Carter! I was a little overwhelmed, and looking back, I'm regretful that we didn't bring a camera with us. We talked for a little bit and she said that she hoped we had a good time. Maybe ten minutes later, a cadre of black-suited men walked out of the back of the restaurant into a van, and I realized upon retrospection that Jimmy Carter was eating lunch on the other side of the same restaurant that I was in! Had I only said something to Rosalynn or gone over myself, I probably could've talked with him.

Either way, great story! It's amazing that you had the chance to talk with him.

.....with Carter's #2 Walter Mondale at a Minnesota political function a few years back in my hometown.  Mondale grew up one county west of my hometown so he was no stranger to the town.

I mean, he's been around for a long time, but not in a direct political way, obviously, for decades, despite what happened in 2002. I always wished I could manage to get the perspective of politicians from our nation's history on today's politicians--what Truman, Nixon, and LBJ would think of Clinton, Pelosi and Obama, as well as the Bush family, for instance--and getting Mondale's views, as someone who has been keeping up with all of it but from a somewhat detached angle, would be a good alternative option.

He held some university position when o was a student at the University of Minnesota. I went to one of his speeches, so that was kind of cool.

Jimmy Carter is one of the american politicians that I respect more, and I'm grateful to see him involved by some way in the Basque peace process.

Thanks for sharing this with us at DKE - it brought me back to my own fond memory of spending the day with Jimmy Carter for a similar event in New York City, and nearly 8 years to the day!

He was hosting a New York City fundraiser for his son Jack, who was running for the US Senate in Nevada that year (he lost to John Ensign). I had the awesome experience of not only spending time with the former President and First Lady Rosalyn Carter, but attending Carter's speech at the Council on Foreign Relations on Israeli/Palestinian relations.

I wrote about my experience after I got home.

    •  Can't say I share that distinction as you (0+ / 0-)

but my paternal great-grandfather was on a committee that personally met with then-Senator Harry Truman when he came to hear constituents way up in Kirksville, MO.
