    Liberal Republican American Senator (Missouri 1868-1874):

    Born in Prussia (1829), among military/espionage leaders of failed democratic revolution in Prussia (1848-50), fled execution to Paris, expelled from France to Britain (1851) as the 2nd Republic ended in Empire, immigrated to Pennsylvania (1852), moved to Wisconsin (1855, ran for office as Republican first time in 1857), served as minister to Spain, led German speaking Union troops in U.S. Civil War as Union general, elected to Senate from Missouri as Republican in 1868, founded Liberal Republican party in opposition to Grant administration, and Reconstruction, in 1870, served only one term, later served as Secretary of Interior (1876-1881) during which he successfully opposed transfer of the Office of Indian affairs back to the War Department.
