  •  No Southern state (0+ / 0-)

Because I don't come from a Southern state I don't believe all the lies told about Reconstruction by Southern racists and Dunning school historians.

I'll go with Eric Foner, Kenneth Stampp, Richard Current, and even Paul Escott, who was quite selectively quoted in the Wiki article to which you cited: The "corruption" was no less under the racist "redeemer" governments that followed. The Reconstruction governments actually gave some political power to blacks and poor whites in states theretofore run by planter elites.

“Republicans...think American standard of living is a fine thing--so long as it doesn't spread to all the people... And they admire of Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.” Harry S. Truman
