    For now it is still in a bank but in a branch that kept its small character and where I know the staff and they know me.

    I think that in the present context, the definition of ROI should include how many jobs an investment creates not just how much dividends are being returned. The 401K has some nice tax advantages but then it ties my retirement earnings to the profit of corporations whose social footprint I may not approve of.

    Credit Unions are increasingly tempting. There are local ones and then there are association (AAAS, etc) related ones. I am not sure what the difference is.

    Loan is an option if I really know the team and the project domain, there is also equity crowd-funding on the horizon with the JOBS Act. That act could turn the table around, imho.
