  •  I usually agree with Reich, but this is wrong, (0+ / 0-)

    wrong, wrong.

First, raise the minimum wage to $15 and strictly enforce labor laws, particular those bent to classify employees as independent contractors.

And then, rather than a guaranteed income, which will simply cause inflation, there should be a strong government working to produce cheap necessary goods for all.

The government should work to provide low cost food to all by policies and subsidies that encourage farmers, particularly small independent farmers.  And triple the allotments for SNAP and raise the income cut-off levels.

Likewise the government should work to provide free housing for those jobless and encourage the building of small apartments.  Yes, I know, sounds like building the projects, but something must be done.  And maybe eminent domain of all those empty family homes owned by banks.

Public transportation and free education including college--free utilities for those that need them.  Medicare for all.  Basic drugstore goods like shampoo and soap.

And public jobs, lots of them, for anyone willing and able to work, jobs that pay well.

If we all had either the basics provided to us for those who can't find work, or provided very cheaply to those who can find work, along with a strong minimum wage, everything would sort itself out.

    •  Why would it cause inflation, "inevitably"? (4+ / 0-)

New dollars chasing new goods that robots make does not cause inflation.

Giving away stuff also has to be paid for.

So I don't think your solution is a solution to your fears about inflation.

The only way to control inflation is to:

      1)  Don't create more dollars than the real economy can absorb, and

      2)  If you do, tax the excess away.
