  •  Actually, (7+ / 0-)

I keep my cell phone in the back seat.  I was nearly run over by a person who was on a cell phone while driving.  It's just too dangerous.

My next car will have a bluetooth thingy.

When driving, pay attention to the road and nothing else.

I deal in facts. My friends are few but fast.

    •  hands-free is about as dangerous (5+ / 0-)

The problem with phone conversations is that part of your brain needed keep a mental map of your actual physical surroundings is easily hijacked to instead create a map of the virtual context needed for your conversation.

This is especially true if the conversation involves a discussion about going somewhere or the situation at some remembered location, etc.

Conversations with passengers in the car avoid this problem because they are also embedded in the same physical context and use the cues from that to moderate their discussion appropriately.  Someone on the other end of a phone doesn't realize they shouldn't demand your attention just as another car swerves in front of you.

      •  Glad someone pointed out the major (0+ / 0-)

difference(s) between talking on the 'phone and talking with a passenger.  Whether the passenger is an adult or a child, "Wait a minute" will usually work instantly.  Exception: a very small child.

The opposite of pro is con. So what's the opposite of progress?
