Maybe it was a tragedy for the driver, but he's not the victim. He's the perp. I hope he suffers guilt for the remainder of his life. And I hope he never again texts while driving or follows too closely, which is just as dangerous.

and is 100% in the wrong.  And I never said he was a victim. But he's a relatively young man and is likely facing a prison term, along with the anger and sometimes hatred of the general public.  His life, as he knows it, is over.  I can have a sense of sorrow for him without condoning his actions or lessening his negligence one bit.  I can say, "there, but for the grace of god/luck/fate, go I."  I don't text and drive, but I do take my eyes off the road to change the radio station, or to look in my rearview mirror, or to turn my head to say something to a passenger.  Thank God I've never had that lead to an accident.

I am also feeling sorrow for his family, who are suffering through this as well.  My heart does go out to everyone involved.  It's tragic and no one who survived this crash will ever be the same again.
