  •  If you have to let attention lapse, (5+ / 0-)

let the conversation lapse. Back when I had a car, I used to talk on the phone occasionally—I'm not a glued-to-the-ear person—albeit on mostly empty rural roads in Idaho, where it's legal. Normally I could cruise along without issue since I knew the roads intimately, but if driving required more attention, I would pause, stutter or forget what I was saying as I diverted most of my attention to the road. On a couple occasions I even had to hang up.

I'm actually sort of torn on this issue, knowing there are legitimate uses for phones—and what about plug-in MP3 players, or changing a cassette tape?—but also being the victim of a distracted driver rear-ending me at 50 mph when I was nearly stopped at a stop sign. God, I miss my car...

On a slightly different tangent, my car had a stick shift, which required a focused mind and a high degree of situational awareness (SA), whereas in most automatic cars nowadays, the tendency is to be lulled into an intellectual and SA dead zone—which is further increased by the relatively easy use of cell phones or other distractions. I realize not everyone can or desires to drive a manual, but I think people should at least learn how to, and experience how much concentration they need to be giving the road, even in an automatic. Don't go on autopilot, but be an active driver, in tune with your car, the road and your surroundings.

"The patriarchal form of government readily becomes despotic, as each person may see in his own family. Fathers…behold with impatience a new character and way of thinking… An empire is an immense egotism." ~Ralph Waldo Emerson, 'The Young American'
