  •  We see what is happening here (12+ / 0-)

Conservatives will somehow wind and weave and get to the point that "Judeo-Christian" religious belief is so fundamental to American culture and identity, that the State can, in effect, permit those beliefs to trump government regulation.  In their minds, these are not so much religious beliefs as bedrocks of society and national identity.

Santeria, Buddhism, Islam, native American use of peyote, all of those other beliefs are not really consistent with the Founding Fathers and the basic Judeo-Christian doctrine that they, perhaps deliberately and perhaps subliminally, wish to recognize as foundational to our legal system.

It doesn't matter that these Founding Fathers were by and large theists rather than Christians, or that what they actually said and lived and did is at variance from  Christianist revision of history.

“If the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin.” Charles Darwin

    •  So rulings to allow animal sacrifice, which (0+ / 0-)

are an anathema to most Christians, are part of "get[ting] to the point that "Judeo-Christian" religious belief is so fundamental to American culture and identity, that the State can, in effect, permit those beliefs to trump government regulation."

      Huh?
