    our political choices but neither my personal morality nor yours can provide a basis for democratic politics and governance. Your citation of the Moral Majority actually supports this point.

    Democracy requires a respect and deference for differing beliefs that extends to the realm of the moral, spiritual and religious. That doesn't mean we are obliged to accept such beliefs ourselves or that we remain silent about where our own morality differs. It does mean that reducing political debates to questions of absolute right and wrong is, more often than not, a losing strategy in a heterodox, democratic polity.

    The abject failure of the Religious Right to do more than impede the progressive march of social policy is a good illustration.
