    considering the formation of identity with disability as a major defining factor at the outset, given that my son asked his question differentiating being a "child" versus a person marked by "disability."

    This is not to downplay loss. It is just a different issue for me. Or... perhaps the discussion could be transformed to the ongoing creation of identity over time and circumstance. However, given that my son's vision impairment issues, and the difference in the appearance of the shape of his eye are not going away soon (major medical breakthroughs notwithstanding), this identity creation is likely to play out over and over again.

    Darling, you didn't use canned salmon, did you?
