  •  There are progressive farmers. (6+ / 0-)

Kent county govt gets a huge amount of its electricity from solar ... Possible b/c it is a small county, but still.

The Sho is partly conservative farmers and lower-my-taxes bidnismen. But there are some 1 percenter types, and there seem to be a goodly number of poor people who vote against their own best interest.

There are a large number of white-flight republicans who commute to jobs from Queen Annes County.

Local governments have a large good-ole-boy component, often Democrat.

My take goes much like this in highly abbreviated form: the Eastern Shore has traditionally been white Protestant.  There is a substantial history of racism. Lincoln got like 2 votes in kent county in 1860, and you can look around the web for the history of lynchings in Maryland. The last one, Ca 1935, was in Princess Anne in Somerset County.

For years, Baltimore has been filled with black people and controlled by Democrats (who do in fact run a machine operation in Balto and in state govt). Since "we" don't like them, "we" will vote Republican.

These aren't my personal feelings, this is what I've concluded after reading (and writing) local history. I arrived here after living in Chicago & Boston. It was a change.

The state political mix was probably a little different when the state senate was 2 per county, but the Supreme Court at some point about 50 years ago said that only goes for the US Senate.

When represented on a population basis, the rural parts of Maryland really lost out. So the Eastern Shore counties feel spit on, and act accordingly.

    Thump! Bang. Whack-boing. It's dub!
