  •  Yeah, that's one of the things (8+ / 0-)

that's disappointed me about Obama (though it probably would have been even worse with a Republican in the office). If you put half the resources into improving the public schools that have been spent on "school choice", people wouldn't need to choose a new school because their neighborhood school would be just fine.

    •  Of course it would have been worse (7+ / 0-)

but that is no excusing this insane, and ultimately anti-education, "Race to the Top" nonsense.

    •  "Probably" worse with a Republican? Please (0+ / 0-)

remember the last republican presidents, remember Mitt.  It would be much worse.  You complain that Obama is not leading on improving education via public schools.  Mitt would be aggressively leading to move to profit making schools.  It would be MUCH worse under one of today's republicans.  AND probably it would all be unreported.  One of the republican administrations big money savers is to reduce testing and measuring how the nation is doing as a whole.

    •  I am acquainted with a high-school student whose (0+ / 0-)

parents sent her to a Montessori school through 4th grade, home-schooled her 5th thru 8th grade, then sent her to a school choice school an hour's commute away.  The poor girl was exhausted most of the school year.
