Kansas has a history of voting for and electing Progressive candidates, but sadly those voters are the grandparents and great-grandparents of present citizens. Thomas Frank does a decent job of explaining this in his famous book.

The first name of Manhattan was New Boston. A boatload of Massachusetts progressives finally ran aground near the site of present Manhattan and there they stopped, founding the town. The nearby Beecher Bible and Rifle Church (still standing) was used by progressive abolitionists to surreptitiously ship Sharps rifles into the territory (carried by wagons in boxes marked "Bibles") to arm the anti-slavery forces. Guerrilla warfare raged in Kansas before the Civil War.

I'm not sure the history of Kansas is even taught to their students these days, or if it is, it's probably altered.
