Lots of things in central AZ named Maricopa.  The present town of Maricopa has only had significant residential population since the last building boom in the middle of the last decade, and was just incorporated in 2003.  Originally the present location was a highway/rail junction known as Maricopa Junction.  The "junction" got dropped at some point.

and Yuma and, of course, Apache and Navajo (side-by-side counties).  The heart of the Navajo Nation is in Apache County.

of an Apache leader rather than a tribal name, but yes, there's a reason the congressional district with the highest Native American population is in AZ.  Three AZ counties are first, second, and third for the most reservation land of any counties in the U.S.  Incidentally, the Navajo (largest tribe in the country) are also an Apachean people, and Apache county includes part of an Apache reservation as well as parts of the Navajo and Zuni reservations.  Pima (another county name) is also a tribal name, as is Pah-Ute (the lost county that Nevada stole, which included what is now Las Vegas), as is Pinal (named for the Pinal Apache).  Coconino is from the Hopi name for the Havasupai and Hualapai tribes.

starts in AZ are still under 2000 a month as of the end of 2013, after peaking at over 8000 during the boom.  Prices have recovered significantly, however, and distressed sales (REO and short sale) are way down from the bust.
