    I would agree that former Soviet Union countries when they expressed desire to join NATO and EU faced internal problems however to what extent Russian medlling or rabid ethnic nationalism is responsible is up for debate.

    Georgia, Moldova had separatist problems long before Putin came to power, Crimeans already in 1992 voted for independence only to see their dreams crushed by nationalist Kyiv.

    Overall I would blame more ultranationalists in these countries which systematically persecuted minorites, be it Russians or others, banning minority schools, languages and so on. Such short sighted policies always invitation for pushback.
