  •  de Toqueville summed it up pretty well (11+ / 0-)
I never met in America with any citizen so poor as not to cast a glance of hope and envy on the enjoyments of the rich, or whose imagination did not possess itself by anticipation of those good things which fate still obstinately withheld from him.
In other words, many of the poor believe they should be quite rich were it but for the actions of others
    •  Yes, that's a big part of the cinderella dynamic (5+ / 0-)

that motivates the dispossessed to further dispossess themselves for the sake of the privileges of the socioeconomic class they aspire to without a chance in hell of ever enjoying.

the other part is a very complex dynamic of fears, far too complex to detail here, but i wish more kogs would examine this kind of possibility with an objective perspective instead of resolutely not understanding it, because we can't solve it if we don't learn what it's component parts are and how to dismantle them.

incidentally, the cinderella dynamic explained by de Toqueville is nicely stated also in one of the many wonderful subversive moments of the play/film "1776".

      •  Yet, I would think that part of imagining (1+ / 0-)

oneself becoming rich from having been poor, is all the good one could do with that kind of money, and what fun it would be to help all kinds of worthy causes... along with never having to worry about money again. But maybe that's just me (or most of us here).

are all for the idea of charity. Charity means the rich are still controlling what happens, as to taxation and government spending where the people have at least some voice.

Much of charity is the best thing one can do, of course! But look at the Gates Foundation: eradicating disease on one hand, pushing school privatization on the other.

Government and laws are the agreement we all make to secure everyone's freedom.
