    and share your loathing for Adelson, I always have to check myself when I get made at "my" people for acting stereotypically.

    The particular pain I feel when I'm revolted by embarrassingly stereotypical behavior actually stems from buying into those stereotypes. In short, I'm using an antisemitic frame (looking out of antisemitic eyes) when I'm cringing.  I'm not as upset at the evil that is being done, as I am embarrassed that the behavior of That Other Jew, Over There, reflects on me. That sort of position is poisonous, and I try not to occupy it.

    On the other hand, I have no hesitation about criticizing the behavior of people I think are acting against their own interests, or against the interests of their communities (for example, any person who votes Republican who makes less than $1 million a year).  But that's about what people do, rather than about what they represent to me.
