It's just that I understand the culture of this place, & understand the mentality of the political class here. Charleston is no bastion of liberal thought; just like the rest of S.C., its culture is essentially complacent & authoritarian, with much emphasis placed on decorum & social hierarchy. To people from other locales, Glenn McConnell may come off like some neo-confederate caricature, but in S.C. he's as "establishment" as it gets. (This is the same legislature that refuses to budge on flying the confederate flag on state house grounds, no matter the harm it causes to S.C.'s image.) He has the unqualified support of the state legislature & the CoC board of trustees. I just can't see that they'd be inclined to bow or even compromise with a group of protesting students & faculty.

The recent "gay book" row fits neatly into this pattern as well. Even while faculty & many students howled about the infringement on academic freedom & the effect it might have on the college's reputation, the board of trustees appears to be moving to assert veto power over future book selections.

CoC faculty, students worry about future of The College Reads! program

Such a development would be outrageous (but let's keep in mind that it's not yet a done deal), but again, it would entirely reflective of the culture here.
