But if you want to see over the top weather coverage, come to St. Louis. Last week our NBC affiliate pre-empted the Today Show for extended weather coverage because we got a dusting of snow. On the grass.

I'm on the fence about preempting regular programming for severe storms. On one hand, I see the need for it. That's all the TV that people without cable get and not everyone has broadband internet (or any internet access at all), and it's the only thing that will tell them if they're in the path of a tornado. On the other hand - with the switch to digital OTA broadcasting and the availability of subchannels, why can't they move all that severe weather stuff to a subchannel, and during severe weather, just put a ticker over the regularly scheduled programming telling people to change to the subchannel for weather info.

Guess it's better to err on the side of caution.

And "media market" is part of the issue. All three of our major networks cover an area larger than  some states, and mutch of it urban or suburban, where weather impacts quite a few people.  Any one part of the area can have major weather threats, while other parts of the area are calm and benign. I'm definitely OK with pre-empting if there is severe weather in any part of the viewing area. Where I object is when they do it for hours on end because there might, maybe, perhaps be a potential for severe weather.
