    I've done this a few times, but with bags of steamers bought in Maine and transported across state lines.  Had to use table salt in the water since sea water was not available.  Maybe this just reflects my OC tendencies, but I would let them sit with the corn meal for a few hours, then change the salted water with more, fresh corn meal.  Total purge.  Top cleansing.  And as sweet as sweet can be. And loved how they extended their "feet" after calming down in the new place.  Never realized clams could languish.

    My mouth is watering as I write this.

    You might like this one:  After I moved to Philly many years ago from MA, I read a local food critic's review of her experience eating steamers.  I nearly blew a clam outta my nose when I read how she liked them with the butter, but found the other liquid in the separate cup/bowl rather tepid, salty and unpleasant.
