    He didn't want to address his own cultural views and the pressure remained, regardless of his words to the company, itself.  Because this went beyond the company.

    And, I feel that's the point he probably came to realize: he was reportedly a fervent supporter of what Mozilla stood for since participating in its founding, related to its mission and community of contributors+users.

    His placement as CEO naturally led to bad publicity on this issue - one seemingly at odds with the general culture at Mozilla.  So, this was becoming damaging to the brand he obviously strove to support - he had the choice to step down . . . or, admit to needing a future change in his personal biases.

    He took the easy way out.

    "So, please stay where you are. Don't move and don't panic. Don't take off your shoes! Jobs is on the way."
