It's an important book today, for obvious reasons.

An unrelated note about Obamacare. I'm in California. Previously, I qualified for a generous subsidy, meaning I only need to pay a very small amount per month for Obamacare-approved health insurance. Yesterday I got a piece of mail from California Covered, the new state social-services agency that oversees Obamacare. I figured the news was bad, since these kind of things normally are. They were going to tell me they'd made a mistake calculating my subsidy, and I was going to have to pay much more towards my premium. My heart fell. I opened the envelope. It was an inquiry about my voter status. Had I registered? Here was a form I needed to register to vote, just in case.

    Welcome to good, constructive government.

    •  Covered California wasn't following the law about (7+ / 0-)

making voter registration materials available, so in response to a lawsuit by voting rights groups, they had to send registration cards to nearly 4 million enrollees last week. It must have been a failure of the website, because the paper application form does ask if the applicant wants to register to vote, iirc.

Here's a strange story dated March 29: Local couple upset after receiving pre-marked voter registration card from Covered California. An anonymous Republican in southern California claims to have received a voter registration card premarked with his choice of party as Democratic. The recipient complained finally to a local TV station, whose story about the incident includes this quote from Covered California: "... the application forms come directly from the Secretary of State's office, with no fields pre-marked. The individual should contact the Secretary of State, which takes these violations of election law extremely seriously, and they will investigate, using the unique serial number."

I'm a Vietnam Era vet. I'm also an Erma Bombeck Era vet. When cussing me out and calling me names please indicate which vet you would like to respond to your world changing thoughts.
