  •  I have trouble buying this. (0+ / 0-)

The actors for that movie trashing Mohammad did not know what they were acting for.  But that's because individual actors may only see their own lines, and because the script never said "Mohammad"---the actors were given lines with a different name, which was changed in post-production.

In this case, however, we're talking about narration.  The narrator doesn't just play one little part that leaves her in the dark about the movie.  This is the one voice that explains everything from beginning to end.  If she read the script alone, I don't see how she could not at least pick up the tenor of the documentary.

I could imagine some really dirty editing trick, but it would have to be pretty contrived.

    •  Voice over... (8+ / 0-)

A narrator is in front of a mic in a room with head phones on most likely with no audio or even the film itself.  Probably some paper on a music stand with the various lines to be said into the microphone and in this case probably arranged to obfuscate the intent of the film.  Also, she probably does many of these things and most are likely on tight budgets for studio time.  So, being a professional she is going to get through the lines correctly and quickly according to the director's instructions thus polishing a reputation for staying on budget to get more gigs.

Then, an editor gets a hold of the recordings and arranges the lines to say what they want.

She might have gone "huh?" a few times, but as a professional with little reason to question the veracity of how the film was described to her, she is not going to waste time implicating the director or producer in the room as a liar without indisputable proof.

      •  Yup. You're given your few lines, and that's it (5+ / 0-)

So you have no info on what the overall context is, unless the producers tell you the truth. That's what the life of a voice actor is like. If it's a cartoon, or something dramatic, where you'll have to provide emotional responses, you'll be given some idea of who you're responding to, and the overall emotional state of each character, plus the situation at the moment.

      •  I'm already granting that. (0+ / 0-)

That's what I mean by reading the script "alone":  just reading the script into a microphone, in a studio, with no further context.

But again, this is the person speaking as the narrator, not some bit part that can be read in isolation without knowing its meaning in context.  The narrator of is providing a spoken narrative for the entire documentary.  The narrator is the one speaking most of the arguments and introducing the ideas and explaining what people are seeing.

It's hard to imagine someone narrating a documentary like Sicko, or Food Inc or Fahrenheit 9/11 without being cognizant of what the documentary is about.

entire script at once and/or that it was read in order.  It is entirely possible that she was told that it was a movie mocking geocentrism and the lines were given to her in an order that would make that plausible.

Remember that narrators and voice actors are rarely given all their lines at once, they will usually be given just what they need to use for that take at any given time.
