    is usually considered unfair, but hey, I fight dirty.

    Small businesses produced 46 percent of the private nonfarm gross domestic product (GDP) in 2008 (the most recent year for which the source data are available to make these estimates).   That is down from the 48 percent share of GDP produced by small businesses in 2002.
    I don't think a 2% drop in 6 years is the big change you claim to see.

        on whether I'm seeing a decline in small businesses.

        Also, do you have any idea which of the companies you see in that shopping center are franchises?  Most franchises  are small businesses.
