    Liberals in England in the early part of the 20th century. He originally opposed women's suffrage but then supported it; he was an active supporter of the Palestine Protectorate (later its High Commissioner); inexplicably (to me, at least) he sided with Chamberlain regarding appeasement of Hitler.
    He and Lloyd-George were enemies, obviously--the men had no use for each other's personalities or ideas. In addition it was a dog-whistle religious slur, given that Samuel was Jewish.
    I certainly don't condone the religious slur, but it was irresistible to suggest the surface interpretation of the slur given what I think of the depth of Murray's intellect.
