    He said that variability in men is greater than women across many traits -- e.g., both the shortest and tallest people tend to be men. He suggested that this might be an issue with mathematical and scientific ability as well, which might explain the lack of representation of women in those disciplines, and that this was a topic worthy of research. His main sin was to be politically insensitive to his audience of academic women.
