I see the whole phenomenon as a socially-reinforced mass delusion, propped up by strong social pressure exerted by those who benefit from that mass delusion.  Their insistence that their delusions be treated with respect and deference is one more application of social pressure against those who would point out that the Pope has no clothes, as it were.

When a religion successfully teaches and motivates simple moral behavior, it does good.  But religions are about much more than that, and motivating simple moral behavior is quite often undercut and sabotaged by all the other agendas any dominant religion invariably pursues.  Dominant religions get that way by supporting the power structure in a society, and in return practitioners gain entry into that power structure.  Socially dominant religions aren't about saving souls; they come to be dominant by keeping the masses quiet and docile.

I just read a fascinating book on this subject: When Prophecy Never Fails. It's a serious sociological study of a UFO group and how--even when their leaders' predictions failed to come true--the members somehow saw it as confirmation of their beliefs. Nothing that happened could convince them they were wrong. Although the author never mentions religion, the study has obvious implications for religion.
And you're right--the socially-reinforced "mass delusion" is exactly what's happening.
