  •  The US Army has the capability of doing lots of (0+ / 0-)

bad things too, perhaps even worse than Snowden's hypothetical "NSA rounding up LGBT" scenario.  So, we must dismantle the army too, according to the same "standard line of reasoning" you're deploying.

There's a line between reasonable precautions on one hand and paranoia on the other.

Above, someone cited the internment of Japanese Americans.  Well, FDR did that before Truman created the NSA, so the ability for government to do that and similar other things pre-dated the NSA, and government STILL has that same capability without NSA, yet neither Snowden nor his supporters are demanding the dismantling of those capabilities.

Lots of government agencies have the capability to do things orders of magnitude worse than NSA, and lots of government agencies have actually done things orders of magnitude worse than NSA, yet everyone is concentrating on dismantling NSA while allowing those other agencies to retain their potential (and past realized) capabilities of evil.

    •  Having capability is only one element. By itself, (2+ / 0-)

it's not enough to constitute a risk. I'm not talking about capability, exclusively. Capability, by itself, means nothing.

I already explained that there has to be sufficient public consent or acceptance. There also has to be a rationale. It doesn't have to be true or valid, just plausible to enough people. Demonization of minorities is world-wide and the US is not exempt from it.

There is no existence without doubt.
