Liberals tend to view Mario in the same way conservatives view Reagan:  through the rose-colored glasses of history.

Mario was no sainted uberliberal either when one looks closely at his actions in office.

Though he wasn't anywhere near as Turd Way as Andrew is - I suspect that's largely because at the time, Turd Way wasn't yet a thing.

But with Wall Street located here, NY has a long tradition of Democrats that are just a bit too friendly with money-changer types - Mario included.

too overwrought and studied to me at the time, like he was trying out for Saint Mario and president just seemed too pedestrian for him.

I have a simple rule for judging pols: put up or shut up.

One thing that Mario did (or, I should say, didn't do) about as well as Andrew.

Like Andrew, Mario tossed the left wing in this state a bone every now and then.  But in reality, Mario was almost as weaselly as Andrew. ALMOST.

Eventually, the left finally figured him out - which is why we ended up with Pataki as governor, as the base either didn't vote or actually voted for Pataki that year.  People eventually got tired of that Cuomos bullshit too.

In some respects, I'd even say Mario was worse than Andrew.  It was before my time, but he repeatedly fucked over his own state employee unions with bullshit like lagged pay - which he did twice - the second time being slapped down by the state Court of Appeals as illegal.  And this was a time when unions and Democrats got along far better than they do today.  That's just one example.  Though in Andrews case, he's only had just one opportunity to fuck his workforce, so he still has plenty of time to surpass the douchebaggery of his father on that front.
