  •  Not a chance of that (14+ / 0-)

Colbert has too deep a sense of the inherent absurdity of life while at the same time revering it to go that route. He's a true mensch.

did. But no-one else does what Stephen Colbert does. And the idea that he's going to bring the Report's satirical edge to the Late Show is pure wishful thinking.

      •  So you think that Stephen Colbert (0+ / 0-)

will actually host the Late Show, not Stephen Colbert? We'll see.

the he'll drop the act for the Late Show. They're not going to alter the format fundamentally. He'll have to shmooze with celebrities and tell somewhat-edgy-but-ultimately-inoffensive jokes. He can't do that in his hypermasculine fact-hating conservative persona. Maybe he'll be great at it. But the character will be gone as sure as the Smothers Brothers were canceled.

He might make it a recurring character, like Karnac on Carson. Not sure if he'd need legal permission from the Comedy Network. But I find it hard to believe that he'll give up on Stephen Colbert, especially going into another presidential election cycle with Hillary v. Jeb a real possibility.

Of course, the rest of his show would have to respect the late night format, adapted to his personality, which is really not THAT different from that of Stephen Colbert in its playful and multi-layered use of irony. Only idiots didn't realize that he was at all times mocking the stereotypical RW blowhard, and mockery IS his fundamental mode of comedy.
