  •  CBS Allow A Repeat of Smothers Brothers? (10+ / 0-)

He may get a rare chance to take a poke at an easy target, but 'that guy' as we know and love him is gone for sure.  Very interesting history with a CBS show The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour pushing the boundaries of political jokes to outright defiance.  A lot of pressure was put on CBS to reign them in and resulted in their being fired.

is the bread and butter of the late-night monologue. Of course he'll be doing plenty of that. And if that were all Colbert's been doing since 2005, I wouldn't be so sad right now.

that was over 40 yrs ago. A lifetime, almost literally. 2 generations of TV viewers.

TV has changed. A lot. Not always for the better. But the late night (and even the prime time) shows are much less restrictive than they used to be.

They had to change. So they did.

Their high ratings were due, in part, to the drama of finding out whether the show would be aired that night and if so, what they would say that would have pissed off the suits at CBS.

CBS did have some balls back in those days.  They employed Edward R. Murrow for years.
