    of his liberal leanings. He wasn't afraid to speak out against stupid conservative shenanigans, and he frequently made jokes at their expense.

      became much more liberal as he got older. And then hugely more liberal after the birth of his son Harry. Being a parent changes things.

        Partially, I suspect it's that he just got more outspoken as the IQ level of conservatives sunk and the idiocy increased. I've watched him from the start, and he always struck me as fairly liberal.

        Also, I think some of it can be attributed to the security that comes with being so well established. Sure, he could make jokes about his employers, but if he turned away too much of the audience, he loses his platform. Dave was no dummy. But toward the end of his career, I think Dave cared less and less about any potential downfall--he was going to say what he thought regardless of the consequences, which actually helped solidify his icon status.
