  •  it is common wisdom in New Mexico (8+ / 0-)

that "Whataburger"  is just them  Texians jealous about the real thing,  which is a Lotaburger,  to be found only in New Mexico over the past half-century.

They cook it up to order, while you wait, and they have their own supply chain of Angus beef.

A local,  home-grown franchise started by Blake Chanslor in Albuquerque in 1952.

(when I get that urge...anywhere in New Mexico).  There is no need to go anywhere else.

As I remember the signs say "Blake's Lotaburger". That explains that.

The closet thing to a chain I enjoyed in Albuquerque was Los Cuates. Not really a chain, not really fast food.

curious portal - to a world of paintings, lyric-poems, art writing, and graphic and web design

      •  heh, you should see the house Blake (0+ / 0-)

finally built himself up on Rio Grande Blvd back in the 80s.

But they still cook it in front of you.  The grill is visible from the counter,  with the grillman and assistants facing away from the customer.

Los Quates is still going.  I don't get into town much anymore.

There's actually one in El Paso. It seems to have escaped from New Mexico, as it's located about two miles from the state line, but it's definitely in Texas. It keeps me from having to drive to Las Cruces occasionally.

If I was any more excited, I would almost be apathetic.
