  •  What Haslam & Corker fail to grasp... (11+ / 0-)

...probably due to their provincialism and sheer ignorance - is that, as a German-based company, Volkswagen doesn't have the antipathy toward unions that most American corporations do.  On the contrary, in Germany there is a long history of management and labor, working together successfully for the good of the entire company - and everyone in it.

For the most part, they don't buy in to the "predatory capitalism" business model that predominates in the United States, with its inherent priorities of selfish, zero sum game, social & economic Darwinism.  The success of the German corporate model speaks for itself.

All that is necessary for the triumph of the Right is that progressives do nothing.

    •  I don't think they don't "grasp" the concept (5+ / 0-)

I think Corker and Haslam, and the rest of the TN "Right to Work"/GOP crowd grasp the concept of management/labor cooperation just fine. They understand it, and still fight it tooth and nail for domestic ideological reasons. The "success" of the "German corporate model" is less than irrelevant to these folks (easily dismissible as foreign socialistical foreign-ness): their priority is to maintain as much political and managerial power for their donor base as possible. And since ANY sort of worker empowerment threatens that regime, they'll try to fight any sort or level of union enablement to the last. Regardless of the consequences (which they, of course, will never have to face)...
