I know several men aged 60+ laugh with - and agree with - Maher. They were either "Reagan Democrats" or "Rockefeller Republicans" when they were younger, so they'd politically align with the Obama/Holder Democratic Party today, but like good Baby Boomers they dance to the tune coming over their radio - which is rightwing. They're kinda racists, now that they're too old to want to dance with women who aren't White.

However, Maher is intellectually macho enough that they recognize him as a peer. And they laugh at his jokes. So they get his message. Which saves them from being rightwing dittoheads.

    That's his use.

Also I find him funny. Until he runs across some of his own narrowmindedness ("libertarianism") and the funny evaporates. But most of the time he's funny, and he's nearly always correct when he's funny. So that's a use too.

I will agree that Maher's use is to keep old, white Baby Boomers in the Democratic fold.

I didn't say he was completely useless!

I simply believe it's the rare case when Maher wins anyone over who doesn't already agree with him.
